Scruples - Judith Krantz

First Published 1978

Book Description on Amazon

" Scruples is the novel that created publishing history, the first-and widely acknowledged to be the very best-novel ever written about the staggeringly luxurious life of a Beverly Hills boutique and the people who work in it. Scruples was translated into twenty languages and made Rodeo Drive famous around the world. The New York Post said that "Scruples was born to be a smash bestseller. . . It has more inside information about the worlds of high fashion and Hollywood than you'd find in a dozen manuals." With Scruples, Judith Krantz earned her reputation as a blazingly talented and original storyteller. she takes her readers behind the scenes of wealthy and fame to show them the real people and the real emotions that exist at the core of even the most high-powered lives. Scruples is the leader of her #1 best-selling novels."

Someone on the cover decribes it as the "bonkiest of the eighties bonkbusters and the one that everyone remembers"

When I saw this in my favourite discounted book store I grabbed it and paid the £1.99. I needed a bit of glitz in my life even if vicariously.

Review

To cut a long story short, excuse the pun, I found the book middle of the road, and not something I would rave about. Needless to say I  plodded through and regrettably looked forward to reaching the end. Am not saying this is a bad book, it was a decent read actually, but there have been so many books since, in similar vain, that this one didn't thrill me or give me anything different.

Conclusion

Not one I would say rush out and buy,  but it's not a bad read, it just didn't rock my boat . But I suspect if I had read this in the eighties I would have been raving about it.

Score:  6.5/10

Next up a thriller. Love a thriller. Now to decide which one from the few I have piling up. Decisions, decisions decisions.

Stranded - Emily Barr (2012)

 Synopsis -  Courtesy of Amazon

Bruised from the breakdown of her marriage, Esther Lomax needs to get away, and Malaysia's unspoilt shores seem the perfect place. But a day's boat trip takes a desperate turn when Esther and six other holidaymakers are taken to a desert island and their guide does not return. The group have no way of getting back to the mainland and know nothing about each other. As the days pass, tensions erupt, secrets emerge and time increasingly runs out, Esther must ask herself the ultimate question: will she leave the island alive?

I stumbled upon this  novel in my village library, and when I saw the title "Stranded" I wasn't that enthused maybe because I had seen so many TV films on the subject so didn't feel inclined to read a book on it. I took the book from the shelf  and had a quick peruse of the back cover synopsis.

Despite my initial reservations, I was drawn in. So in true sassy style, I swiped my card in the new fangled library machines, and carried the book to my humble abode.

Review

First of all don't you just love that book cover. Makes me long to run barefoot across some warm sand.

I did what I usually do when I start a book, sit near my living room window and curl my legs up. I mean business when I do that.

After reading the first few chapters I know that I was going to enjoy this book, and I was getting excited, yes sirree. Each subsequent chapter had me wanting more, and I found I was getting so absorbed, I was reading more pages in one sitting than I had for some time. I suspect I could have read this book in a couple of doses but alas life goes on, so I had to wean myself off.

Each day I couldn't wait to pick it up - don't ya love it when that happens - and continue with the ride. Another story runs alongside it and you are guessing where this fits in.

Some reviewers thought the last few chapters a little weak in comparison to the rest of the book.

This is a fabulous beach read, so am therefore giving this a high score as I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Conclusion - A great read so I recommend you order this from your library and enjoy.

Score 9/10

Hello

Is there anyone out there? Well hello to anyone about, this is my first post for my book review blog. It's only a laid back venture, I just thought it would be fun to give my thoughts on what I read. It will also encourage me to keep the reading up since am off and on the reading wagon like no-ones business.
